Bio:
“If you take sexual advantage of her, you’re going to
burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child
molesters, and people who talk at the theatre.” - “Our
Mrs. Reynolds”.
Like his name, Book is a mystery, covered in an enigma, bound in
a conundrum, and wrapped as a nice guy. He certainly seems innocent
enough - a preacher, who never loses his calm exterior despite the
crew of brigands he’s shipped out with. He plays moral compass
to the crew, but it becomes clear that Shepherd Book didn’t
spend his entire life turning the pages of his Bible.
For instance, he knows not only how to handle a gun, but the make
and model of common sniper rifles. He knows bullet trajectory, the
ion trail of various types of craft, and has an in-depth knowledge
of Alliance law enforcement procedures. He has enough clout with
the Alliance to be guaranteed timely medical services, and have
no questions asked afterward. He handles himself in the manner of
an old soldier - very like Zoe and Mal - which we see in “War
Stories” as he leads Simon through his first firefight and
is trusted with Zoe, Jayne, and Wash’s backs.
As proficient with a gun as he is at cooking and praying, Derrial
Book should never be judged by his cover.
