Full Name: Inara Serra
DOB: October 4, 2490
Current Age: 27
Birthplace: Sihnon
Position on Serenity: Ambassador, of sorts.
War Record: As stated in “Out of Gas”,
Inara supported Unification. However, she harbors no known sympathies
toward the Alliance. She will do business with them, as well as any
Core worlds the crew visits, but keeps her personal and professional
life separate. |
Bio:
“One of the virtues of not being puritanical about sex is not
being embarrassed afterwards. You should look into it.” - “Heart
of Gold”
Sihnon, the jewel of the Core worlds, is a fitting birthplace for
this beautiful woman. Inara Serra seems to have been a born Companion,
rising fast through the ranks of House Madrassa on Sihnon. Rumor has
it she was on the fast track to House Priestess, but she left Sihnon
early in 2516. No one knows why, though it certainly couldn’t
have had anything to do with not fitting into the Companion mold.
She learned dozens of languages, countless social customs, swordplay
and various other types of combat, dress and deportment - and that’s
before you get to the main focus of a Companion’s life. Sex,
or to be more specific, legalized prostitution.
But don’t ever call her a whore. Inara’s profession is
the result of her life’s work, and she takes much pride in it.
She is completely self-sufficient, and conducts herself according
to Guild law. She chooses her clients very carefully, and although
sex is the main attraction, she also uses the arts of massage, conversation,
and the calming influence of her surroundings to put them at ease.
Her space is sacred - it is her home, her career, and her sanctuary
all in one.
Ironic, really, that she rents it from a man like Malcolm Reynolds.
A man who disrespects her right to privacy, consistently insults her
chosen profession, and repeatedly calls her a whore to her face. But,
as Shakespeare taught us, the course of “true love” never
did run smooth. There is a definite connection between Mal and Inara,
who despite their differences, actually work rather well together
(as seen by their spectacular setup of Saffron/Yolanda/Bridget in
“Trash”).
A lady amongst thieves, Inara brings Serenity respectability - something
the crew needs more than they care to admit. Her profession allows
them to land on worlds and move in circles that they would otherwise
be denied access to. She can waltz into a backwater moon the same
as a wealthy planet, and get the crew out of some rather tight situations.
Her connections allow the crew more opportunities for gainful (and
mostly honest) employment, as well as giving her more weight amongst
a crew she, by all rights, shouldn’t be associating with. Serenity
has become more than just a part of her career - it’s become
her home, her family.
She wouldn’t have it any other way.
