Full Name: Hoban “Wash”
Washburn
DOB: May 18, 2486
Current Age: 33
Birthplace: Orion
Position on Serenity: Pilot
War Record: Much is unknown of where exactly Wash
spent the years during the war. It’s plain to see that he was
never a soldier like Mal or Zoe, and it’s unlikely he harbors
Alliance sympathies. Most likely, he flew various missions, remaining
neutral, or under both sides’ radars. |
Bio:
“Oh my God, what could it be? We’re all doomed! Who’s
flying this thing?! Oh, right - that would be me. Ah, well, back to
work.” - “Bushwhacked”.
Known to everyone only as “Wash”, Hoban Washburn’s
first love in life was the stars. Born on a planet where the atmosphere
was so polluted, you couldn’t even see them, he enrolled in
flight school just to see what he was missing out on. And he’s
been out among them ever since.
The rest of Wash’s past is a mystery - who his family is, what
they do, where he was during the war, and how he found out about the
job on Serenity. It’s implied that he’s traveled a good
deal of the galaxy, as he has stories about many different planets,
including one where they juggle geese.
Wash probably felt right at home on that planet, as a man who’s
highly amused by life in general. His sense of humor is the first
thing you’d notice about him - if you could get past the fuzzy
caterpillar on his upper lip. Eventually sense (or Zoe) prevailed,
and he became the manic, clean-shaven pilot of Serenity. And made
it his own personal mission to woo Zoe Alleyne. Said mission apparently
worked, as they’ve been happily married for a few years.
Upon first glance, one could mistake Wash for a simple guy - the comic
relief; the henpecked husband whose warrior woman wears the pants
in the relationship. Not so much, with Wash. When push comes to shove,
and his safety, or that of the crew, is threatened, he can be just
as strong and pragmatic as Zoe (and if you don’t believe me,
watch “War Stories” again). And then there’s his
trademark zen-like state while piloting Serenity. When everyone else
is losing their heads, and screaming about crashing, Wash is completely
calm and competent.
And he makes a hell of a getaway driver.
