| Bio: “Once you’ve been in Serenity, you never leave. You just learn to live there.” - “Serenity, Pt 2”. Virtually nothing is known about Zoe’s childhood and origins, and it’s very possible that that’s the way she likes it. Most of what is known about her past lies in her military records - very apropos for this career soldier. Zoe was born onboard ship, and has spent nearly all her life on one. Nothing is known about her family both before and after she enlisted with the Independents. For all intents and purposes, Serenity is her home, and the crew her family. She’s the one onboard who’s known Mal Reynolds the longest, having served with him in the war. They met early on in the war, and have been together ever since. Zoe, being a career soldier, may not have always agreed with Mal’s seat-of-the-pants type of command, but she has followed him to hell and back any number of times. She knows him, inside and out, and is the voice of reason amongst the crew. When Mal goes too far, she’s the one who will keep him in check. Serenity Valley affected Mal most strongly of the Independents, but it also had a marked effect on Zoe. Never having any faith to lose (that we‘ve ever heard of), the horror of the place for her was the senseless deaths of both Alliance and Independent troops due to the brass’ abandonment of the place. Neither her deeply-embedded military training nor her honed persona of stone-cold killer could ever have prepared her for weeks of starvation and neglect. Just as Mal has never left that Valley, Zoe’s never forgotten it either. But there’s another side to Zoe than just the soldier, and that’s the woman that comes out when she married Hoban Washburn, Serenity’s pilot. Far from love at first sight (though that may have had to do with Wash‘s horrendous mustache), Wash and Zoe’s marriage is one built on trust and devotion. Yes, they have their fights (mainly revolving around Wash’s distrust of her and Mal’s relationship and Zoe’s desire to have children one day), but at the end of the day, they come back to each other. And heaven help you if you threaten Wash, because you will call down the wrath of Zoe upon you, as Tracey found out in “The Message”. Zoe has her hands full, keeping the peace on a ship like Serenity. Her job requires her to place herself in some rather dangerous situations, and her husband sometimes doesn’t appreciate that, and takes it out on Mal. And then Jayne will start needling Simon, and require either Mal or Zoe to pull rank on him. Even while playing referee to squabbling crew members, Zoe manages to keep her trademark calm.
